Don’t cram as many houses as you can into one day.
You may think you are being productive and efficient by viewing as many homes as possible in one day, but this tactic can quickly backfire, creating confusion, wearing you out, and making all the houses blend together. Choose a few homes you really want to view, and take the time to view those on one day. If there are more on your list, choose a different day or even later in the day.
Don’t rule out the perfect homes.
Not all homes will be the perfect home, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t the perfect home for you. You may be searching for that perfect traditional Colonial and may therefore overlook a two-story in need of a little TLC. Don’t go searching for the perfect home because, chances are, your blinders will inhibit you from finding the home of your dreams.
Look beyond the home.
Although the home you choose if clearly of importance, the neighborhood in which it is located is important, too. Ask your real estate agent about the neighborhood and check out the neighborhood statistics on the Internet regarding the school system, the crime rate, and even the incidences of petty crime.
Don’t let your emotions get the best of you.
Sure, the home buying process can be an emotional one, but making an emotional decision instead of a well thought-out decision based on your budget, your lifestyle, and your family’s needs, can turn your home purchase into a disaster. When you feel as if you are getting too emotional (or aggravated or stressed), take a minute to step back and regroup before proceeding. Posted by Carey Frankel on
