A Brief History of Northeast Florida
Amazingly, the history of Northeast Florida can be significantly traced back to about 12,000 years ago. The region was first populated by Native Americans known as the Timucuans. A more modern type of colonization began in the mid 1500's when the French colony of Fort Caroline was established near the mouth of the St. Johns River. One year later, the city of St. Augustine was founded for Spain by Pedro Menendez de Aviles.
After hundreds of years of tumultuous land exchange between the Spanish and the British, Florida was finally a permanent part of the United States in the late 1800's. In the early 1900's, Florida's First Coast began to draw larger crowds of visitors and residents because of the year-round mild climate, and people began to settle along the coast ultimately helping the region to grow into what it is today.
