One of the best things you can do when selling your St. Johns County property is to produce a clean palette of sorts. That means removing all of the home’s décor that isn’t neutral. Unfortunately, this means wallpaper usually has to go.

Buyers are much more likely to feel comfortable about purchasing a St. Johns County property that doesn’t have your favorite floral wallpaper flowing throughout the first floor. It may be the perfect wallpaper for you, but chances are your buyers are not going to feel the same.

With that said, it’s time to tackle the wallpapered walls in your home. If the thought of peeling wallpaper gives you the hives, then you’re not alone. Luckily, however, there are a variety of wallpaper removal methods to facilitate the task at hand.

1.       The easiest and cheapest method of removing wallpaper is using common items you probably already have in your home. Many people swear by a sponge and a bucket full of hot water to get the job done, but tougher jobs may require a bit more help. Try vinegar and water, liquid fabric softener and water or dish detergent and water. Combine one part of these to about nine parts of warm water and then, using a large sponge, wipe down the wallpapered walls. Let the water mixture set for about 15 minutes and then repeat. Using a paint scraper, begin removing the wallpaper from the wall. If it continues to give you a hard time, soak the walls down again and repeat.

2.       There are many wallpaper removal chemicals on the market, with the most common being DIF. Many people have success with these chemical paper removers, just be sure to carefully follow the manufacturer’s directions and protect your flooring and furniture.

3.       Using a paper scorer may also help the water or chemicals reach the underside of the wallpaper where the adhesive is located. These paper scoring tools score hundreds of tiny holes in the wallpaper, thus allowing the liquid to better penetrate the paper. Be careful when using one of these tools, however, as they can damage the wall if you press down too hard.

4.       Another easy way to apply your hot water mixtures is to use a garden sprayer. These sprayers produce a fine mist that will cover the wallpaper surface, yet not run down the wall.

5.       Fore large or particularly tough jobs, rent a wallpaper steamer. These use hot water to penetrate the wallpaper for easy removal.
