The Duval County School System is comprised of nearly 9,000 teachers, 130,000 students, and 160 schools.   Standing as the most robust school district in the Northeast Florida region – as well as the 20^th biggest district in the country – its academic reputation meets its size.  Six of the district’s schools were given the esteem of “America’s Best High Schools,” and in fact, only Duval County’s school district had the honor of having two schools appear in the top 30 ranking.  According to Newsweek Magazine, Paxon High School and Stanton College Prep were considered the 28^th and 5^th top schools in America, respectively, in 2006.

Duval County’s Magnet Program gives students an opportunity to hone specialized skills and talents.  With more than 70 magnet schools, the district features 30 different academic themes, ranging from aviation and computers to the visual arts and communication.  Whether your child has a passion for engineering or performing arts, he or she can find a place in the esteemed magnet program.

Parks and Recreation

Nearly 84,000 acres or 131 square miles of city, state, and national parks make up the Jacksonville Regional Park System. Timucuan Preserve multi-use trail (walking/biking/horseback riding) opened in 2005. The path is Phase One of a plan to connect Hanna Park to Amelia Island State Park. The paved trail will span about 15 miles and cross Ft. George Inlet between Hugenot Park and Talbot Island on A1A.

A new boat ramp is under construction at Cedar Point and new facilities including a visitor station, a concession to rent kayaks and bikes; primitive camping and bathrooms. Park projects include a north-south bike trail that will link Jennings State Park to Cary State Park and cross the east-west Jacksonville/Baldwin Rail Trail, and a river taxi run by the National Park Service that crosses the St. Johns River into the Timucuan Preserve, one of the largest parks in the nation.
