A Brief History of Northbank and southbank Downtown Jacksonville
During the late 1800's, Downtown Jacksonville was just a lumberyard. During the winter months, it would double as a tourist destination for visitors from the north. In 1901 much of the downtown area was destroyed by a devastatingly large fire that left more than 10,000 people homeless. Rebuilding efforts were helped along by famous New York architect Henry Klutho. In the early 1900's, many films and movies were made in Jacksonville before Hollywood was popularized, and the area was known as "Metro" and became known as one of the M's in MGM Studios. Since that time, the growth has been tremendous for Downtown Jacksonville for both business and residential areas
