Parks in St. Johns County
Between Ponte Vedra Beach and Vilano Beach lies Guana River State Park, spanning both sides of A1-A from the Tolomato River (part of the Intracoastal) to the ocean. A Spanish historian’s account from 1592 has led modern scholars to believe that Guana River was the site of Ponce de Leon’s first landing in Florida. The park, with its high, untouched sand dunes, retains the appearance of Florida’s pristine coastline as it may have appeared at the arrival of the Spanish. The park has a small lookout tower and 8.5 miles of unpaved hiking trails, accessible from South Ponte Vedra Beach.
