The citizens of the charming seaside community began to put their efforts behind the modernization of the area. Banding together, the citizens of the community coordinated the development of a water plant that could process two million gallons of water daily. Indeed, it was this system that received the Florida State Board of Health Merit Award in 1957 and 1958 for having the best water treatment facility in its class. “Operation Bootstrap” was the city's next project, and with the community’s support and a municipal bond, Atlantic Beach quickly had a sewage facility, a fire and police station.
Today, the citizens continue to drive forth the thoughtful development of their community. For example, recently in 2001, the Beaches Habitat for Humanity volunteers created the Jordan Park Community Center. The materials were donated by the city as an exchange for municipal office space in the new community center – a great symbol of the citizens and city working hand-in-hand.
The island is moving forward with planned and well designed development, featuring garden pavilions, a dedicated fishing pier, beautiful nature trails and parks, camping facilities, and a floating sea dock perfect for launching canoes and kayaks. With more than 65 acres of parkland, Atlantic Beach is a stunning oasis of beauty and recreational fun.
