Fort Caroline, Jacksonville, Florida in Duval County

Fort Caroline was home to a French Huguenots and originally was settled in 1562. The fort itself lasted only a year before the Spaniards took it over and destroyed it. The Spaniards promptly built their own fort on the same spot. A few years later, a French army attacked, and burned the fort, evicting all the Spaniards. Nevertheless, Spain rebuilt the fort, but abandoned it the next year for fear they would be attacked again. The settlement near the fort remained, but the exact location of the settlement is not known.

That settlement is now part of the Jacksonville Region Parks system and is one of the most fascinating locations within Jacksonville and Duval County. It contains a reduced-scale reconstructed fort that is great for family adventures.

Homes in Fort Caroline and Fort Caroline Shores tend to be more expensive than homes in the remainder of the Jacksonville area - for good reason. The average home sale price in the Jacksonville area during the first few months of 2008 was $184,000, but in Fort Caroline the average price was $234,000. The median sales price in Fort Caroline was $239,000, compared to a median of $155,000 in Jacksonville.
