 A Brief History of Jacksonville, Florida

The area is very rich in history and it goes back for thousands of years, beginning with the Timuca Indians. It wasn't until 1822 that the area was actually called by its current name. Jacksonville was very important throughout the American Civil War, as it supplied cattle and hogs for Confederate use. After the war, the town was a disaster. Once the area was rebuilt, however, it became a place known for the rich and famous to come and enjoy the winter months. Later, in the early nineteen hundreds, many filmmakers began making movies in Jacksonville because of the year-round warm climate. For many years, it was called the "Winter Film Capital of the World."

According to Jacksonville's government website, the city is divided into six large sections as follows: Greater Arlington, North Jacksonville, Northwest Jacksonville, Southeast Jacksonville, Southwest Jacksonville, and Downtown Jacksonville.

As of 2005, there were 782,623 people reportedly living in Jacksonville with a total of 284,499 households.
