Looking for a good school can seem daunting. Not to worry! There are really only 10 basic things to look for in a good school.
Great Expectations
Studies have consistently shown that when parents and schools have high expectations for student achievement, students respond by meeting those expectations. As you begin your search for a good school, talk to staff and the principal. If they expect great things, that’s what they will get!
Great Principal
A principal is as important to the school as a coach is to a good sports team. Without a good principal at the helm, a school will flounder. Take time to meet principals of prospective schools. Do they enjoy their work? Do they seem to appreciate parental involvement? Do they speak of their teachers with respect? All of these things paint a picture of a strong, caring principal.
Great Teachers
Every school needs great teachers. Even though the No Child Left Behind Act requires schools to hire well-qualified teachers, you want to be sure your child will learn to love school. A good teacher is the best guarantee that your child will learn to excel.
Enthusiastic Parent-Teacher Organization
In some areas, schools have Parent-Teacher-Student organizations. Regardless of what they are called, these organizations should be lively, active, and instill pride in the school and education as a whole. When parents are heavily involved in these organizations, everyone benefits!
Challenging Curriculum
The curriculum should be challenging, but not overwhelming. Children must be challenged in order for them to learn. Too much pressure, however, and they will feel overwhelmed. Keep this in mind as you look at Jacksonville Beach real estate.
Busy Students
Do the students seem busy? Are they engrossed in what they are doing? They should be momentarily distracted by visitors, but anxious to return to their work or even want to explain to you what they are doing.
Make sure you are welcomed at your child’s school. Can you participate in art class? Have lunch in the cafeteria? Are there plenty of volunteer opportunities, or does the school prefer that you step back and ‘let the teachers do their job’? The best schools welcome parental involvement.
Good School “Report Cards”
How does the school you are investigating compare to other schools in the area? Compare schools using online tools, from the privacy and convenience of your home.
There is Evidence of Children and their Participation
When you visit the school, are the students invisible? That’s not a good thing. Instead, displays of art work, school projects, and even extra-curricular posters are a sign that this is a well-rounded, involved school.
Your Heart Says “This is a Good Place!”
Parents know what is best for their child. In the long run, go with your instinct. If your instinct says, “This is a good place!” then you will probably be happy with the school you have chosen.
