Largest To Smallest
Starting with the largest items in your home and working your way down to the smallest of items will make the downsizing process much easier. The largest items would be your furniture. If you are downsizing from a three-bedroom home to a two-bedroom home, you know that you have to get rid of at least one set of bedroom furniture. If you have televisions in every room in your current home, you will need to decide how many to keep for your new home. Once you see the larger items disappearing, you will be able to notice your progress which will keep you from getting overwhelmed and frustrated.
Do Not Wait Until The Last Minute
Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to work your way from room to room to sort out what stays and what goes. Especially if you have lived in your current home for several years, most often you will have accumulated a lot of things that need to be sorted through. Giving yourself about three to six months will make the process of downsizing much easier so that you are not rushing and making rash decisions about what you want to keep and what you must get rid of.
