Selling your Jacksonville home may be a difficult process for many reasons, one of which is the loss of privacy you may feel when buyers begin touring your home.

Selling your home requires you to open your front door and invite perfect strangers into your home. If the thought of allowing hoards of people to walk through your Jacksonville home and look through your private possessions makes you more than a little nervous, then it is best to begin protecting your and your family’s privacy before listing your home for sale.

  1. The first thing you may want to make clear is that either your agent or the buyer’s agent needs to be present during the walk-through. In other words, you may feel more comfortable if an agent accompanies the buyers through the house instead of letting them walk through unassisted.
  2. Your second task is to lock up or remove any financial or personal documents from the home before a showing. That means removing your checkbook, bank and credit card statements, and even utility bills and credit card offers. Any personal information should be left personal, and it is up to you to make sure it remains just that.
  3. Remove any personal items which may give your buyers a clue into who you are. For example, remove marriage licenses and college diplomas from the wall, as well as any religious artifacts. Some people, for example, may people have predispositions or negative feelings about certain groups of people or of certain religions. There is no reason that your personal information should become available to potential buyers during the home buying transaction.
  4. Remove jewelry and other items of value. Although your home will likely be protected with the presence of an agent, it is a wise decision to hide or remove jewelry or other items of value. Ask a close friend or family member to store any valuable items for you until after the move. This will not only provide you with peace of mind while selling your home, but it will also keep your personal items safe and secure during the move.
