As with most places in our country, talks of being more environmentally friendly and ‘green’ is a hot topic in Jacksonville, especially with candidates running for positions in Jacksonville’s city government. Recently, Jacksonville even submitted an interesting grant proposal about turning cooking oil into fuel for the city’s diesel vehicles. Jacksonville is currently looking into many ways to be a greener city, which is great for the communities. Even Jacksonville homeowners are making an effort to be greener. Home buyers in the market for Jacksonville real estate will see a host of environmentally friendly upgrades including recycled glass countertops, energy efficient appliances, and more.

Norred vs. Owens

Truman Norred, running for Place 3, is a member of the Jacksonville Garden Club and is also a Master Gardener. It is not surprising that Norred wants to see such changes to the city. Norred said he would like to see Jacksonville become a Tree City USA and that he would like an ordinance that would allow homeowners to have the final say over what happens to the trees on their own properties. Other green projects for Jacksonville which interest Norred are putting in a greenway from Chief Ladia Trail to the square as well as a bit of greening to Alabama Highway 21.

Bill Owens, Norred’s opponent, would also like to establish a fair tree ordinance so as not to infringe on personal property rights. As far as businesses building in town, Owens has plans to make these projects adopt greener standards. One of Owens’ pet peeves is when businesses build without using green practices. Additionally, Owens says that he is opposed to cutting down trees unnecessarily as opposed to trimming them.

Sandra Sudduth vs. Lovelle Buchanon – Place 4 Candidates

Sandra Sudduth, running for re-election in Place 4, encourages people to keep and plant trees. She is in favor of Jacksonville’s recycling program but also says that she would like to see more environmentally friendly programs implemented throughout the city. Sudduth’s opponent, Lovelle Buchanon, believes that going green is a way to introduce a healthier lifestyle to the city.

Each of Jacksonville’s candidates has good ideas about how to implement greener programs into the city. This will be a great benefit to residents of Jacksonville, especially homeowners who are also working hard to be more environmentally friendly. Jacksonville properties will continue to show an increase in value as homeowners use greener remodeling tactics to renovate their homes.
