Jacksonville Schools Over Budget On Transportation Costs

As the nation’s economy continues to decline and prices continue to rise, not just business and families are feeling the squeeze, but so is the Jacksonville school board. When budgets were set last year, the members of the board expected that gas prices would hold relatively steady and so $420,568 was budgeted for bus transportation for students. Before the fiscal year is over in September however, the school board expects to be about $70,000 over budget on transportation costs due to the rising cost of fuel. Unfortunately for students, this means that money must be squeezed from other programs to balance out the budget.

Fiscal Year 2009

As a result of going over budget and expectations changing over whether or not gas prices will continue to rise, the school board has allocated an additional $42,127 for fiscal year 2009 just for transportation costs. This means the total budget for transportation costs will now be $462,681. Parents and students will see an increase in the cost of field trips and the school sports teams will have to pay higher prices for the cost of fuel to go to away games. Everybody pays the price when the economy isn’t doing well.

Fortunately, for families who could not previously afford to become homeowners, now is a good time to do so. And even though Jacksonville schools are having budget issues, they still have a great public schools.
